Allergens in buckwheat
Buckwheat is not wheat and is not a cereal containing gluten. The name is the trap. Pure buckwheat flour, groats and many soba noodles still need a specification, because soba is often cut with wheat.

The usual pattern
Buckwheat is a seed used like a grain. Galettes and blinis made only with buckwheat contain no gluten cereal from the flour. The moment wheat flour is mixed in, wheat is back on the label.

How to write it on the label
PPDS food needs the name of the food and a full ingredients list, with the 14 allergens emphasised every time they appear. The Food Standards Agency’s PPDS guidance is the practical reference. A typical ingredients fragment looks like this — yours must follow the specification of the product you actually use.

Where it shows up
Galettes, blinis, granola, porridge-style pots and noodles.
Soba assumed to be wheat-free
Many soba noodles list wheat first. Read the pack before you call the noodle pot buckwheat only.
A gluten-free claim still needs every other ingredient to comply. Butter and egg do not add gluten, but they add milk and egg.

Brands differ. Treat this page as the usual pattern, then match the label to the tub, bag or recipe in front of you.
