Vegan sausage roll label example

A vegan sausage roll still needs a full ingredients list. Butter pastry would break the vegan claim and add milk; a vegetable-fat pastry is wheat and sometimes soya. The filling is often soya or wheat protein, with celery in the seasoning.

The label

Ingredients (teaching narrative)

Wheat flour, vegetable fat (soya lecithin), soya protein, onion, celery, sage.

  • Wheat — pastry
  • Soya — fat or the sausage filling
  • Celery — if the seasoning contains it

What this teaches

Do not copy a pork sausage-roll label. Sulphites may disappear and soya may appear. Vegan is a claim; the ingredients list is the legal allergen information.

Is this PPDS?

Rolls bagged before sale are PPDS, vegan or not.

Questions

Is a vegan roll free of the 14 allergens?
No. Wheat is almost always present. Soya and celery are common.
Can the pastry be all-butter?
Not if you are claiming vegan. Butter is milk. Use the fat that matches the claim and the label.
